Let’s get to know Aleia!

What do you do at VNA & BWH?

I am a nurse at the Blue Water Hospice Home. I provide care to patients and their families. I also am an on-call supervisor on nights at the Hospice Home.

Why did you choose this type of work?

I worked on an oncology floor at a hospital, and we had a lot of hospice/comfort care patients and I fell in love with providing the type of care needed. I think it is so important to focus on a person as a whole and what they want rather than focusing on a disease. Often, it does not even feel like work.

Why do you choose to work at VNA & BWH?

I hadn’t realized there was something like the Blue Water Hospice Home in our area. I thought the idea of it was so special and I wanted to be a part of it. It truly has a ‘home’ feel versus that of a typical agency. And I love that the Hospice Home is only 10 minutes from my house!

What is a favorite memory you have of work?

There have been too many to count. I have a good relationship with all my co-workers, and we help each other out. I have also met so many family members that show so much gratitude such as hugs, cards, flowers, and baked goods and it is such a heartwarming feeling to know how much of a positive impact you had during someone’s worst days.

Aleia not only picks up extra shifts when it is needed to provide support to her co-workers and the patients/families, but she goes above and beyond every time she works. She has taken on the role of an on-call supervisor to give additional support. She truly is a shining star!
